Vieux Carre
“Vieux Carre” means “old square” or “old quarter” in French. This cocktail was originally developed in New Orleans, at the Carousel Bar in Hotel Monteleone. Go vieux carrazy.
Yield: 1 cocktail
Ingredients
1 oz. sweet vermouth*
1 oz. rye whiskey
1 oz. brandy (preferably cognac)
1 bar spoon Benedictine
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
2 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
Orange or lemon twist (for garnish)
Instructions
Combine all ingredients in a pint glass or small pitcher. Top with ice and stir with a bar spoon, about 20 seconds. Strain into a glass. Top with fresh ice and garnish with the orange or lemon twist.
Notes
*While any sweet vermouth will probably do, we prefer Carpano Antica or Punt e Mes
