The Last Word

Our first word on this drink is danger…this cocktail will definitely have the last word. It goes down super smooth, but packs a punch. Chartreuse is a French liqueur derived from herbs and botanicals, and can be found as Green Chartreuse or Yellow Chartreuse. Green Chartreuse is stronger, at 138 proof, and Yellow Chartreuse is a bit milder and sweeter, at 80 proof. We typically use Yellow Chartreuse for this recipe, but pick your poison.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz. gin*

  • 1 oz. Chartreuse liqueur

  • 1 oz. Luxardo (Maraschino liqueur)

  • 1 oz. fresh lime juice

  • Lime wheel or lime twist, for garnish

  • Shaker

  • Hawthorne strainer (if your shaker doesn’t have a built-in strainer)

  • Fine mesh strainer

Instructions

Combine the gin, Chartreuse, Luxardo, and lime juice in a shaker. Top with ice and shake vigorously for about 10 seconds.

Double strain through the Hawthorne strainer (or through the built-in strainer of your shaker) and the mesh strainer into a cocktail glass.

Garnish with the lime wheel or lime twist. Enjoy!

Notes

*For gin, we highly recommend Rieger’s Midwestern Dry Gin. It blends beautifully in gin-forward cocktails - not too sweet and not too dry.

Recommended Equipment

  • Featured Glassware: Although the gold rimmed French champagne flutes that we used (see photos) are no longer available for sale, Crate & Barrel still offers the classic French champagne flutes at an affordable $4.95 per glass. We really enjoy this style of glass for its versatility - the sturdy base helps prevent accidental spills, but the glass itself is still thin and elegant. Great for sparkling wines and strained cocktails!
